THE DAMNED - Phantasmagoria {Wicked edition cd}

The Damned are a punk/goth band formed in London, England in 1976. They were the first British punk band to release a single ("New Rose"), put out an album (Damned Damned Damned), and tour the United States. They are considered one of the founders of gothic rock. The Damned have incorporated many different styles into their music and image, such as garage rock, psychedelic rock, cabaret and the theatrical rock of Screaming Lord Sutch and Alex Harvey.Vanian's vocal style has been described as similar to a crooner, which is unique for a punk rock vocalist. Throughout their history, Damned have dissolved and reformed many times, with singer Dave Vanian as the sole constant member. However, the lineups have always included either guitarist Captain Sensible or drummer Rat Scabies (or both).

While Phantasmagoria is not an example of a classic goth album, it does show how far The Damned had come from their punk roots.What had once started out as a hoarse yell, indistinguishable from most other punk vocalists, had developed into a gothic croon in a league of its own.

ASRAI - Pearls In Dirt


The origins of Asrai date back to the mid '80s. They finally released their debut in 1997, and it took until 2004 for their second release. The Dutch gothic metal band is back with only their third album.
Pearls In Dirt is melodic and atmsopheric. The songs have layers of keyboards that create the gothic feel. Some tracks are slow and somber, others faster and more guitar driven. There are hooks aplenty and several memorable songs. Margriet is Asrai's vocalist, and she sings with a clear alto that has a great tone and a lot of emotion. She has a pop sensibility and style that makes the songs warmer and more inviting. There are so many female fronted gothic metal bands now that it's hard to keep track of them, but if you're a fan of groups like Lacuna Coil and Evanescence, Asrai may be right up your alley

THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE - Imagica

The Birthday Massacre is from Toronto, Canada. Combining their interests in various musical and artistic styles, the band has successfully accumulated an impressive international fan base, press accolades, and defied categorization with their unique sound and visuals. The band was formed in 2000 and independently produced and recorded their first two albums, Nothing and Nowhere and Violet. Through both of these high-demand releases, as well as their highly acclaimed and beautifully atmospheric website, the band has obtained a large and loyal fan base throughout the world. The band's lineup consists of vocalist Chibi, guitarists Rainbow and Mike Falcore, keyboardist Owen, drummer Rhim and the recently returned O.E. on bass. Due to their independent success, in 2005 they were approached by European record label Repo Records (followed shortly by Metropolis Records in North America) and the band began its steady climb to reaching a much wider audience. 2005 also marked the bands first European festivals, a video for "Blue" and the independent creation of a small DVD collection of videos. Recently, the band has been busy with the writing and recording of their new album, "Walking With Strangers", all through the winter months of 06 /07. During May and June of this year the finishing touches were put to the album at Orange Studios in Toronto and The Warehouse in Vancouver, with legendary Canadian Producer/Engineer Dave "Rave" Ogilvie. The album is due out in September, just in time for the second leg of the tour. Touring in the last couple of years has had the band performing internationally, travelling across Canada, the United States, Mexico, and many European countries. They have become renowned for their high-energy live performances, drawing large, mixed crowds through their appeal to fans of a surprisingly wide range of genres. Equally comfortable playing intimate venues as they are on a festival stage, the band's highly-praised performances will continue into the next year as they continue touring on the "Walking With Strangers" 2007 tour.

THIS ASCENSION - Sever

Best known for heavenly vocals from their lead singer Dru, the alternative rock band This Ascension has just released their fourth album on Tess Records. The label says it best: "This Ascension blends shimmering synthesizer and guitar sounds with an uncommonly complex and powerful rhythm section, layered with dynamic, heavenly vocals." Their international acclaim resulted initially from 1992 MTV-Europe's 120 Minutes airing of the stunning and surreal video that accompanied "Ill Met By Midnight" which gave their second album immediate acclaim. This Ascension's gothic-like alternative rock music achieves a worldly sound fusing lush instrumentation and soaring female vocals with moody acoustic effects.

Again laced with layer upon layer of Dru's soaring vocals, this time with even heavier guitar parts and more varying lush accompanying instrumentation, the new album is entitled Sever (Tess 13, 1999). Originally planned for completion in August 1997, the band worked for an additional year and a half on the project to create a 50-minute album with 13 melodic tracks including one remix. It is a natural, yet highly progressed, follow-up to Light and Shade (Tess 3, 1991) and Walk Softly, A Dream Lies Here (Tess 7, 1994) as well as their debut album Tears in Rain (Tess 2, 1989), which is in the process of being reissued by the label.
The album's tracks vary between soaring gothic vocal excursions and heavy, very metal, guitar riffs. At times the vocals are way up—in your face—but it is equally likely to find them buried way under a lush instrumental melody or bridge. Lyrics are generally difficult to understand strictly by listening—the vocals have been mixed more as an additional instrument and when they soar, they carry the track's melody, but the clarity we have heard from a couple of other artists is heavily subdued. The attractive and well-produced artwork accompanying the CD contains a full transcription of the lyrics for listeners that want to learn the words.
Harmonies are either provided by the other artists or by multi-tracking Dru's voice and both methods work quite well. A balance is achieved between vocal elements, samples and instrumentals, each soaring to equal effect during their respective parts in the individual tracks. Dru's climbing vocal excursions set This Ascension apart from other artists operating in or near this genre, e.g., Love Is Colder Than Death, Love Spirals Downwards, Claire Voyant, XVII Vie and Stella Maris. Only Chandeen and Single Gun Theory have an added level of vocal clarity to the lyrical portions of their music.
This Ascension's music is highly complex and worldly in texture. Like progressive music, it will likely take listeners a few sessions with the album to become familiar with the sound and sequence of the individual tracks, making individual melodies hard to recognise until hearing them several times over. Typical of this style of music and the artists that surround the Hyperium, Projekt, Tess and other alternative rock heavenly vocal labels, this type of music is highly enjoyable, but it requires exposure, education and patience to fully appreciate.
Sever, like This Ascension's earlier albums, is just so complex in its composition and arrangement that it takes a good deal of concentration to comprehend, and repeated listenings to become familiar with what's been played and what's to come next on the album. The album is almost devoid of the memorable melodies that would be found in a more accessible rock album with their hook-like choruses.
The production quality of Sever is very rich with lush instrumentals and processed or multi-tracked vocals being used to great effect along with effects to paint dramatic musical soundscapes. Unlike the garden variety rock and pop, or even a progressive band, This Ascension's complex arrangements create a whole mood within each track fusing an effective combination of effects, instrumentals and vocals. "Fatal Dawn" and "Columba Aspexit" serve as two wonderful examples of this fusion.
"Dorado" is one of two dramatic instrumentals found on the album. Although samples are used to create textures throughout the work, here effects join highly rhythmic percussion and powerful guitar and synth to create a song of large proportions and vast depth fully illustrating the individual artists' talents. Equally powerful guitar work and other instrumentals are found in the other stunning instrumental "Amalopa." In contrast, "Serpents Serenade" is very heavy, electric, metal, with thick percussion yet a serious multi-tracked vocal part with an almost rap style balances the song out.
"Here Again" is one of the most memorable tracks on the album with its highly accessible basic tune, light (for this album) instrumental and harmonious chorus. Another is the much more orchestrally instrumental "Love Lost Years" which is monumental in the lushness of its moving arrangements and features some of the most dramatic vocal passages on the album while effectively integrating the styles of the songs that precede it into a mega-concluding number. A final almost dance-oriented worldly percussive remix of "I Wish" works well, although we prefer the standard mix played several tracks earlier, and actually closes the CD.
Sever is certainly the most accomplished work from This Ascension featuring a broad range of alternative rock tunes that illustrate the band's virtuousity in every way. The second half of the album works slightly better than the first in its diversity, range and depth of the individual tracks. With repeated listenings, this complex album like the band's earlier recordings, it is sure to attract and entice many listeners of the this ever-expanding genre. With an extensive touring schedule and the massive acclaim of their live performances, This Ascension should be sought out in a concert venue. Their new album has truly been worth the wait and should be sought out as it is a highly enjoyable listen

LISA GERRARD - Duality


Lisa Gerrard comprised one-half of the Australian duo Dead Can Dance, from the early 1980s until 1996. When she and bandmate Brendan Perry disbanded the group, Gerrard embarked upon a dual career as a solo artist and soundtrack composer. Her solo work is characterized by dreamy, ethereal and often orchestral music accompanied by Gerrard's other-worldly vocals and spiritual lyrics. Impeccably produced, these releases are evocative of medieval and prehistoric musical forms, and showcase Gerrard's skills at adapting her voice to different languages and her fascination with exotic instruments and world music. Her albums are often described by critics as being similar to New Age music, and have drawn comparisons to the music of Irish songwriter and singer Enya. She may have invited this comparison when she stated on her offical website that "music is a place to go to take refuge," and added, "It's a sanctuary from mediocrity and boredom. It's innocent and it's a place you can lose yourself in thoughts and memories and intricacies."

Bourke's contributions to Gerrard's music grew into a full-blown collaboration on her follow-up album, Duality, on which he received joint credit. According to the record label 4AD website, Gerrard invited Bourke to engineer and play percussion on a track she was recording at her home studio in Australia. After recording two songs, Gerrard explained: "We were collaborating more and more in the writing area.... And it became very interesting to us because we discovered that most of the things that I am not good at, Pieter was, and most of the things he doesn't endeavor upon are my area. It was interesting to see how strong we were, because it was such a good match." Bourke added: "I thought I'd be working for maybe three weeks.... And we spent a year doing it, working really, really intensely for that period of time." Summing up the experience, Gerrard added that "the unique quality of the situation is that we were able to find such a gentle equilibrium, an unspoken common ground that allowed us to be liberated by what we were making and not ashamed, not afraid."
While recording the soundtrack to the film Gladiator, Gerrard met Irish classical composer Patrick Cassidy. "We just clicked," she stated on her website. "We discovered a shared love of music and stories and poetry and of music as a way of telling a story." The two arranged to spend two months recording together in Australia, resulting in the 2004 release Immortal Memory. The album "grew out of 'the desire to bring things from the ancient world into the contemporary world,'" Gerrard explained to Boston Globe reporter Joan Anderman. "We've got a 6,000-year-old poem on the album, and it still resonates with the same compassion and beauty." For that song, "The Song of Amergin," she learned to speak Gaelic phonetically. She also sang "The Lord's Prayer" in Aramaic. "Elegy" is a composition that Gerrard intended to use as part of the soundtrack for Gladiator. Intended for the scene in which Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, dies, the piece is given a fleshed-out arrangement that might have lost its full impact had it been edited for a soundtrack. Another of the pieces, "Sailing to Byzantium," was inspired by a poem of the same name by William Butler Yeats. The album prompted Stylus magazine critic Gentry Boeckel to comment: "The composer of these sacred interpretations, from the first words spoken by an Irish mortal to 'Come Lord' mantras and Yeats couplets, is established Celtic orchestrator Patrick Cassidy. The ageless, transient voice is of veteran ex-gother and Australian siren Lisa Gerrard. The feelings Immortal Memory produces are those that accompany the most emotional of sand, sword, and Bible epics. By capturing moments of ancient past, Gerrard and Cassidy have somehow created something timeless through set-in-stone permanence."
While critics and diehard Dead Can Dance fans admired her solo efforts, Gerrard found a wider audience as a soundtrack composer. Her work has appeared on soundtracks for the Michael Mann films Heat, The Insider, and Ali; the Ridley Scott films Gladiator and Black Hawk Down; and in Mission Impossible 2, Whale Rider, and The Passion of the Christ. She won a Golden Globe Award for her work on Gladiator.
Gerrard explained her personal creative journey on the 4AD website, commenting, "Ultimately, in doing the work, you draw upon something that is the river of life that you possess.... Music has a voice inside it that calls you, and you know that this is your work, this is what you must do. It doesn't differ, project by project---that's the way you work."

TROBAR DE MORTE - Fairydust

The Spanish act Trobar de Morte makes fairy-like music, which brings you in a pleasant dreamy state. Or, in their own words, they lead you to a world “where fairies exist, and beautiful, deep forests prompt a return to a non-existent medieval era. There, where the witches dance around the bonfire and share their desires with the night and the stars, where the sea whispers the secret name of the wind, and the moon lulls us to sleep with its sweet lullaby…all of this breathes life into Trobar de Morte”.
Central member of the group is Lady Morte, who founded Trobar de Morte in 1999. In the following year she put the project on hold for a while, when she founded the neo-classical/medieval formation Ordo Funebris, together with members of Sathorys. This group did not last very long (though released two fine albums), so in 2002 Lady Morte continued where she had left with Trobar de Morte. At first she only used keyboards and samplers, but soon other musicians like a drummer and guitarist joined the project.
In 2003 the mini-cd ‘Nocturnal Dance of the Dragonfly’ came out, followed at the end of 2004 by the album ‘Fairydust’ (self-released in an edition of 1000 copies). The music has vague echoes of Loreena McKennit and Hagalaz’ Runedance ­ ethereal female vocals, strumming guitar chords, floating synths, occasional bird sounds, bells and tribal drums. The lyrics (in English, Spanish and Gaelic) deal with elves and ancient pagan customs.
At times the music sounds a little too anonymous, but especially the songs with a more forceful rhythm (like ‘Ordo Militum Christi’ en ‘Cuncti Simus Concanentes’) leave a lasting impression. In general I find this a most charming album. On stage (like at the Wave Gotik Treffen) Trobar de Morte is also very enjoyable (if you don’t mind elves’ ears and Robin Hood costumes). On their website (under ‘merchandise’) you can listen to fragments of some songs.

NICK CAVE - Your Funeral My Trial

Nick Cave digs even deeper into his personal obsessions here than on the previous THE FIRSTBORN IS DEAD. While FIRSTBORN's ominous bluesiness is still represented on the title track and "Long Time Man," the balance of this album sounds decidedly more European. It was here that Cave's Gothic troubadour persona really began to take shape. He takes the role of the grim storyteller on the album's strongest track "The Carny" (featured to fine effect in Wim Wenders' film WINGS OF DESIRE, in which Cave also appears as himself) and "Stranger Than Kindness." There's a gauzy, almost supernatural feel to YOUR FUNERAL, evocative of the classic Hammer horror films--classy and expertly constructed, but undeniably disturbing.
