Tones On Tail were originally Daniel Ash (Bauhaus) and Glenn Campling (roadie for Bauhaus). The group was formed in 1982 as a side project for Daniel while he was still in Bauhaus. They were later joined by Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus) after that band's breakup. Though the career of Tones On Tail lasted only a couple of years (1982-1984), the group definitely made a lasting mark with their hard-to-define deep dark blue sound. After Tones On Tail ended, David J. (Bauhaus) rejoined with Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins to form Love and Rockets. Traces of Tones On Tail can be found on the last Bauhaus record, "Burning From The Inside" (particularly on the track "Slice of Life"), as well as the first Love and Rockets LP, "Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven" (particularly on the title track).

Sleepless is a now-defunct goth-rock/deathrock band from São Paulo, SP (Brazil). Sleepless started playing around in the Sao Paulo goth scene in 1995. Some of their gigs included many Espaço Retrô appearances, as well as shows at Armageddon, Soulshadow's one-year aniversary party, and others.
Formed by Rodrigo Martins, Nelson Pascuareli and Julia B., the band eventually went through many members, including Marcelo Zambello (guitars), Pedro and Pablo C. (guitar and bass), Celia (keys, vocals), Marian (bass, keys) and Chileno (guitars). Marian and Chileno have been active in the SP goth scene and continue to play together in DEATHWISH (br).

The Damned are a punk/goth band formed in London, England in 1976. They were the first British punk band to release a single ("New Rose"), put out an album (Damned Damned Damned), and tour the United States. They are considered one of the founders of gothic rock. The Damned have incorporated many different styles into their music and image, such as garage rock, psychedelic rock, cabaret and the theatrical rock of Screaming Lord Sutch and Alex Harvey.Vanian's vocal style has been described as similar to a crooner, which is unique for a punk rock vocalist. Throughout their history, Damned have dissolved and reformed many times, with singer Dave Vanian as the sole constant member. However, the lineups have always included either guitarist Captain Sensible or drummer Rat Scabies (or both).

While Phantasmagoria is not an example of a classic goth album, it does show how far The Damned had come from their punk roots.What had once started out as a hoarse yell, indistinguishable from most other punk vocalists, had developed into a gothic croon in a league of its own.

The origins of Asrai date back to the mid '80s. They finally released their debut in 1997, and it took until 2004 for their second release. The Dutch gothic metal band is back with only their third album.
Pearls In Dirt is melodic and atmsopheric. The songs have layers of keyboards that create the gothic feel. Some tracks are slow and somber, others faster and more guitar driven. There are hooks aplenty and several memorable songs. Margriet is Asrai's vocalist, and she sings with a clear alto that has a great tone and a lot of emotion. She has a pop sensibility and style that makes the songs warmer and more inviting. There are so many female fronted gothic metal bands now that it's hard to keep track of them, but if you're a fan of groups like Lacuna Coil and Evanescence, Asrai may be right up your alley

The Birthday Massacre is from Toronto, Canada. Combining their interests in various musical and artistic styles, the band has successfully accumulated an impressive international fan base, press accolades, and defied categorization with their unique sound and visuals. The band was formed in 2000 and independently produced and recorded their first two albums, Nothing and Nowhere and Violet. Through both of these high-demand releases, as well as their highly acclaimed and beautifully atmospheric website, the band has obtained a large and loyal fan base throughout the world. The band's lineup consists of vocalist Chibi, guitarists Rainbow and Mike Falcore, keyboardist Owen, drummer Rhim and the recently returned O.E. on bass. Due to their independent success, in 2005 they were approached by European record label Repo Records (followed shortly by Metropolis Records in North America) and the band began its steady climb to reaching a much wider audience. 2005 also marked the bands first European festivals, a video for "Blue" and the independent creation of a small DVD collection of videos. Recently, the band has been busy with the writing and recording of their new album, "Walking With Strangers", all through the winter months of 06 /07. During May and June of this year the finishing touches were put to the album at Orange Studios in Toronto and The Warehouse in Vancouver, with legendary Canadian Producer/Engineer Dave "Rave" Ogilvie. The album is due out in September, just in time for the second leg of the tour. Touring in the last couple of years has had the band performing internationally, travelling across Canada, the United States, Mexico, and many European countries. They have become renowned for their high-energy live performances, drawing large, mixed crowds through their appeal to fans of a surprisingly wide range of genres. Best known for heavenly vocals from their lead singer Dru, the alternative rock band This Ascension has just released their fourth album on Tess Records. The label says it best: "This Ascension blends shimmering synthesizer and guitar sounds with an uncommonly complex and powerful rhythm section, layered with dynamic, heavenly vocals." Their international acclaim resulted initially from 1992 MTV-Europe's 120 Minutes airing of the stunning and surreal video that accompanied "Ill Met By Midnight" which gave their second album immediate acclaim. This Ascension's gothic-like alternative rock music achieves a worldly sound fusing lush instrumentation and soaring female vocals with moody acoustic effects.

Again laced with layer upon layer of Dru's soaring vocals, this time with even heavier guitar parts and more varying lush accompanying instrumentation, the new album is entitled Sever (Tess 13, 1999). Originally planned for completion in August 1997, the band worked for an additional year and a half on the project to create a 50-minute album with 13 melodic tracks including one remix. It is a natural, yet highly progressed, follow-up to Light and Shade (Tess 3, 1991) and Walk Softly, A Dream Lies Here (Tess 7, 1994) as well as their debut album Tears in Rain (Tess 2, 1989), which is in the process of being reissued by the label.
The album's tracks vary between soaring gothic vocal excursions and heavy, very metal, guitar riffs. At times the vocals are way up—in your face—but it is equally likely to find them buried way under a lush instrumental melody or bridge. Lyrics are generally difficult to understand strictly by listening—the vocals have been mixed more as an additional instrument and when they soar, they carry the track's melody, but the clarity we have heard from a couple of other artists is heavily subdued. The attractive and well-produced artwork accompanying the CD contains a full transcription of the lyrics for listeners that want to learn the words.
Harmonies are either provided by the other artists or by multi-tracking Dru's voice and both methods work quite well. A balance is achieved between vocal elements, samples and instrumentals, each soaring to equal effect during their respective parts in the individual tracks. Dru's climbing vocal excursions set This Ascension apart from other artists operating in or near this genre, e.g., Love Is Colder Than Death, Love Spirals Downwards, Claire Voyant, XVII Vie and Stella Maris. Only Chandeen and Single Gun Theory have an added level of vocal clarity to the lyrical portions of their music.
This Ascension's music is highly complex and worldly in texture. Like progressive music, it will likely take listeners a few sessions with the album to become familiar with the sound and sequence of the individual tracks, making individual melodies hard to recognise until hearing them several times over. Typical of this style of music and the artists that surround the Hyperium, Projekt, Tess and other alternative rock heavenly vocal labels, this type of music is highly enjoyable, but it requires exposure, education and patience to fully appreciate.
Sever, like This Ascension's earlier albums, is just so complex in its composition and arrangement that it takes a good deal of concentration to comprehend, and repeated listenings to become familiar with what's been played and what's to come next on the album. The album is almost devoid of the memorable melodies that would be found in a more accessible rock album with their hook-like choruses.
The production quality of Sever is very rich with lush instrumentals and processed or multi-tracked vocals being used to great effect along with effects to paint dramatic musical soundscapes. Unlike the garden variety rock and pop, or even a progressive band, This Ascension's complex arrangements create a whole mood within each track fusing an effective combination of effects, instrumentals and vocals. "Fatal Dawn" and "Columba Aspexit" serve as two wonderful examples of this fusion.
"Dorado" is one of two dramatic instrumentals found on the album. Although samples are used to create textures throughout the work, here effects join highly rhythmic percussion and powerful guitar and synth to create a song of large proportions and vast depth fully illustrating the individual artists' talents. Equally powerful guitar work and other instrumentals are found in the other stunning instrumental "Amalopa." In contrast, "Serpents Serenade" is very heavy, electric, metal, with thick percussion yet a serious multi-tracked vocal part with an almost rap style balances the song out.
"Here Again" is one of the most memorable tracks on the album with its highly accessible basic tune, light (for this album) instrumental and harmonious chorus. Another is the much more orchestrally instrumental "Love Lost Years" which is monumental in the lushness of its moving arrangements and features some of the most dramatic vocal passages on the album while effectively integrating the styles of the songs that precede it into a mega-concluding number. A final almost dance-oriented worldly percussive remix of "I Wish" works well, although we prefer the standard mix played several tracks earlier, and actually closes the CD.
Sever is certainly the most accomplished work from This Ascension featuring a broad range of alternative rock tunes that illustrate the band's virtuousity in every way. The second half of the album works slightly better than the first in its diversity, range and depth of the individual tracks. With repeated listenings, this complex album like the band's earlier recordings, it is sure to attract and entice many listeners of the this ever-expanding genre. With an extensive touring schedule and the massive acclaim of their live performances, This Ascension should be sought out in a concert venue. Their new album has truly been worth the wait and should be sought out as it is a highly enjoyable listen

LISA GERRARD - Duality

Lisa Gerrard comprised one-half of the Australian duo Dead Can Dance, from the early 1980s until 1996. When she and bandmate Brendan Perry disbanded the group, Gerrard embarked upon a dual career as a solo artist and soundtrack composer. Her solo work is characterized by dreamy, ethereal and often orchestral music accompanied by Gerrard's other-worldly vocals and spiritual lyrics. Impeccably produced, these releases are evocative of medieval and prehistoric musical forms, and showcase Gerrard's skills at adapting her voice to different languages and her fascination with exotic instruments and world music. Her albums are often described by critics as being similar to New Age music, and have drawn comparisons to the music of Irish songwriter and singer Enya. She may have invited this comparison when she stated on her offical website that "music is a place to go to take refuge," and added, "It's a sanctuary from mediocrity and boredom. It's innocent and it's a place you can lose yourself in thoughts and memories and intricacies."

Bourke's contributions to Gerrard's music grew into a full-blown collaboration on her follow-up album, Duality, on which he received joint credit. According to the record label 4AD website, Gerrard invited Bourke to engineer and play percussion on a track she was recording at her home studio in Australia. After recording two songs, Gerrard explained: "We were collaborating more and more in the writing area.... And it became very interesting to us because we discovered that most of the things that I am not good at, Pieter was, and most of the things he doesn't endeavor upon are my area. It was interesting to see how strong we were, because it was such a good match." Bourke added: "I thought I'd be working for maybe three weeks.... And we spent a year doing it, working really, really intensely for that period of time." Summing up the experience, Gerrard added that "the unique quality of the situation is that we were able to find such a gentle equilibrium, an unspoken common ground that allowed us to be liberated by what we were making and not ashamed, not afraid."
While recording the soundtrack to the film Gladiator, Gerrard met Irish classical composer Patrick Cassidy. "We just clicked," she stated on her website. "We discovered a shared love of music and stories and poetry and of music as a way of telling a story." The two arranged to spend two months recording together in Australia, resulting in the 2004 release Immortal Memory. The album "grew out of 'the desire to bring things from the ancient world into the contemporary world,'" Gerrard explained to Boston Globe reporter Joan Anderman. "We've got a 6,000-year-old poem on the album, and it still resonates with the same compassion and beauty." For that song, "The Song of Amergin," she learned to speak Gaelic phonetically. She also sang "The Lord's Prayer" in Aramaic. "Elegy" is a composition that Gerrard intended to use as part of the soundtrack for Gladiator. Intended for the scene in which Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, dies, the piece is given a fleshed-out arrangement that might have lost its full impact had it been edited for a soundtrack. Another of the pieces, "Sailing to Byzantium," was inspired by a poem of the same name by William Butler Yeats. The album prompted Stylus magazine critic Gentry Boeckel to comment: "The composer of these sacred interpretations, from the first words spoken by an Irish mortal to 'Come Lord' mantras and Yeats couplets, is established Celtic orchestrator Patrick Cassidy. The ageless, transient voice is of veteran ex-gother and Australian siren Lisa Gerrard. The feelings Immortal Memory produces are those that accompany the most emotional of sand, sword, and Bible epics. By capturing moments of ancient past, Gerrard and Cassidy have somehow created something timeless through set-in-stone permanence."
While critics and diehard Dead Can Dance fans admired her solo efforts, Gerrard found a wider audience as a soundtrack composer. Her work has appeared on soundtracks for the Michael Mann films Heat, The Insider, and Ali; the Ridley Scott films Gladiator and Black Hawk Down; and in Mission Impossible 2, Whale Rider, and The Passion of the Christ. She won a Golden Globe Award for her work on Gladiator.
Gerrard explained her personal creative journey on the 4AD website, commenting, "Ultimately, in doing the work, you draw upon something that is the river of life that you possess.... Music has a voice inside it that calls you, and you know that this is your work, this is what you must do. It doesn't differ, project by project---that's the way you work."

TROBAR DE MORTE - Fairydust

The Spanish act Trobar de Morte makes fairy-like music, which brings you in a pleasant dreamy state. Or, in their own words, they lead you to a world “where fairies exist, and beautiful, deep forests prompt a return to a non-existent medieval era. There, where the witches dance around the bonfire and share their desires with the night and the stars, where the sea whispers the secret name of the wind, and the moon lulls us to sleep with its sweet lullaby…all of this breathes life into Trobar de Morte”.
Central member of the group is Lady Morte, who founded Trobar de Morte in 1999. In the following year she put the project on hold for a while, when she founded the neo-classical/medieval formation Ordo Funebris, together with members of Sathorys. This group did not last very long (though released two fine albums), so in 2002 Lady Morte continued where she had left with Trobar de Morte. At first she only used keyboards and samplers, but soon other musicians like a drummer and guitarist joined the project.
In 2003 the mini-cd ‘Nocturnal Dance of the Dragonfly’ came out, followed at the end of 2004 by the album ‘Fairydust’ (self-released in an edition of 1000 copies). The music has vague echoes of Loreena McKennit and Hagalaz’ Runedance ethereal female vocals, strumming guitar chords, floating synths, occasional bird sounds, bells and tribal drums. The lyrics (in English, Spanish and Gaelic) deal with elves and ancient pagan customs.
At times the music sounds a little too anonymous, but especially the songs with a more forceful rhythm (like ‘Ordo Militum Christi’ en ‘Cuncti Simus Concanentes’) leave a lasting impression. In general I find this a most charming album. On stage (like at the Wave Gotik Treffen) Trobar de Morte is also very enjoyable (if you don’t mind elves’ ears and Robin Hood costumes). On their website (under ‘merchandise’) you can listen to fragments of some songs.

NICK CAVE - Your Funeral My Trial

Nick Cave digs even deeper into his personal obsessions here than on the previous THE FIRSTBORN IS DEAD. While FIRSTBORN's ominous bluesiness is still represented on the title track and "Long Time Man," the balance of this album sounds decidedly more European. It was here that Cave's Gothic troubadour persona really began to take shape. He takes the role of the grim storyteller on the album's strongest track "The Carny" (featured to fine effect in Wim Wenders' film WINGS OF DESIRE, in which Cave also appears as himself) and "Stranger Than Kindness." There's a gauzy, almost supernatural feel to YOUR FUNERAL, evocative of the classic Hammer horror films--classy and expertly constructed, but undeniably disturbing.

Best known for her vocal and writing contributions to the now defunct atmospheric heavy metal group, Rain Fell Within, Dawn has been concentrating on her own solo work for the past several years. In 2001 Dawn published her first debut release as a limited edition CDR production through The Fossil Dungeon. Sold-out quickly, this release gathered Dawn a spot on Zillo Magazine's "Heavenly Voices" compilation series and fostered many wonderful reviews among publications and fans of ethereal and vocal music worldwide. In 2004, Dawn's first full-length solo debut, "Dancing, Dreaming, Longing..." witnessed her collaboration with the Riddick brothers (The Soil Bleeds Black) in creating an exhibition of Dawn's angelic soprano voice accompanied by a myriad of ethereal piano compositions, electro-pop, darkwave, and ethnic influences painting a rich cascade of emotional depth. Aside from her partnership with The Fossil Dungeon, Dawn is also working with album producer Lance Bendiksen, known for his work with artists like Sara McLachlan, The Cowboy Junkies, The Pretenders, and INXS. Dawn has also showcased her voice with various guest appearances in other bands such as Witch-Hunt (death metal) and The Soil Bleeds Black (medieval music). She has worked alongside other notable musicians like Mary of Garden of Shadows (heavy metal) and Jennifer of Autumn Tears (neo-classical).

Lycia should be considered one of the most important acts in goth rock, but has not yet gotten the publicity it deserves. With the re-release of Estrella, these wrongs can finally be corrected. Lycia starts out Estrella with “Clouds in the Southern Sky”, a very ethereal, instrumental track that meshes well with the backdrop for “El Diablo”. “El Diablo” showcases the haunting vocals of Tara Vanflower even as the instrumentation on the disc simultaneously strives for organic and inorganic perfection. Tara plays the role of the flag-girl during a dragrace (in all those crappy 50s teen movies) as this dynamic tension fuels greater and more impressive constructs. This album was originally released in 1997 and the general sound present during tracks like “Silver Silver” really reflects that. “Silver Silver”, as with a number of other tracks on Estrella, looks towards the dominant ethereal paradigm and really make a beautiful go at it. The incorporation of an atmosphere, bleak and dark as it may be during “The Kite” really shows the psychological dominance of Lycia throughout; much like tribal rhythms played on drums, a listener’s psyche is changed throughout. Lycia’s sound might be a little dated, but what the music on Estrella does has not changed in the near-decade since the album was first released.

Diamanda Galás
A resident of New York City since 1989, Diamanda Galás was born to Anatolian and Greek parents, who always encouraged her gift for piano. She studied a wide range of musical forms, as well as visual-art performance, before moving to Europe. There she made her performance debut at the Festival d'Avignon in France in 1979, performing the lead in the opera, "Un Jour comme un autre," by composer Vinko Globokar, based upon the Amnesty International documentation of the arrest and torture of a Turkish woman for alleged treason. Galás released her first recorded work in 1982, and her numerous musical and theatrical works have since included the pivotal Plague Mass (1990), the haunting mass for People with AIDS; Vena Cava (1992), the solo voice and electronic work concerning AIDS dementia and clinical depression; Schrei 27 (1996), which deals with torture in isolation; the concerts/recordings of Malediction and Prayer (1998), Judgment Day, Concert for the Damned, The Masque of the Red Death (1984 - 1988), and most recently, La Serpenta Canta (2004), a greatest-hits collection from Hank Williams to Ornette Coleman, and Defixiones, Will and Testament (2004). Galás is currently working on the composition and commissioning of the opera, Nekropolis. In 2005 she was awarded Italy’s prestigious Demetrio Stratos International Career Award. 2007 will see the MUTE release of her new album, Guilty Guilty Guilty, featuring tragic and homicidal love songs.

Mors Syphilitica appeared after the break-up of cult underground band Requiem In White in 1995. This break-up was a big disappointment for fans of the band and simply those who enjoyed good bands playing authentic, original and beautiful music. But destruction often leads to creation of something unexpected, something better. That was the case this time as well, and from the remains of Requiem In White emerged two projects - Eric Hammer and Lisa Hammer (formerly Houle) decided to do all the studio work alone and called themselves Mors Syphilitica

Mors Syphilitica's second album Primrose is a testament to the Hammers' love of ballads. It is a collection of songs in the vein of Victorian love songs and bluegrass murder ballads. The addition of the banjo and mandolin to their work breathes a new life to their work, a new purity. It is simultainiously the most musically diverse of their works and the most refined. I bears the signature deeply. The use of soundscapes, samples and toys, enhances the immediacy of the invocation of the world the songs create.

Switchblade Symphony, a compelling union of chemistry and circuitry, was formed in San Francisco in 1989 by composer Susan Wallace and vocalist Tina Root. These talented artists took dreamy, dark visual imagery, the poetry of alienation, and the timeless romance and grandeur of classical and theatrical styles of music, and layered these elements over dynamic heavy beat industrial and lush electronica to create a unique and vivid auditory tapestry.
Their intense, theatrical live performances in San Francisco and self-released cassettes created a buzz in the underground alternative scene. Their first full-length album, Serpentine Gallery, debuted in 1995 on Cleopatra Records and attracted the attention of the underground music press.
In 1996, the band embarked on their first U.S. tour, with labelmates Christian Death and Big Electric Cat. George Earth joined them as their live guitarist, and Eric Gebow as their live drummer. Switchblade Symphony soon found themselves at the forefront of the alternative darkwave movement which noticed a visible, high profile resurfacing in the 90s.
For their spring, 1997 tour, Switchblade Symphony released Scrapbook, a fans only EP of out of print material from their early demos. Their highly anticipated second album, Bread and Jam for Frances, was released on September 16, 1997. It took a different direction from Serpentine Gallery, incorporating aspects of trip hop, drum n' bass, and experimental. Once again, their album received lavish praise, garnering features in Alternative Press, Industrial Nation, the L.A. Times, Seconds, BAM, and Ink 9, just to name a few. Their fall 1997 tour in support of the album was highly successful.
In 1998, the band began work on their third release, The Three Calamities, but were temporarliy halted when personally asked by labelmate Gary Numan to open up for him on a three-month, sold out, stateside tour. The following spring saw them touring with Frontline Assembly.
The Three Calamitieswas released on May 25, 1999. Taking an atmospheric approach, it steps further into the line of experimentation. This latest effort showcases the production talent of Gregory Butler. The band recorded each track on a new state of the art digital 24 track system which was then taken to Daniel Lanois' EL TEATRO studio in Oxnard, CA. The tracks were then transferred to the studio's world class analog decks and mixed by Grammy Award winning producer/engineer Mark Howard. The end result is a sonic palette rich in maturity and aural textures that have defined such artists as Massive Attack and Portishead. With each new release came a new approach, a Switchblade Symphony trademark

The beginning of the group can be dated to 1990. It arose from the ruins of punk trio Hrdinové Nové Fronty ("The Heroes of the New Front"). The frontman of XIII. Století, Petr Štepán, says: "It is logically only one genre, which can grow up from punk past, without declining their music from the past". During evolution, the membership of the group changed many times, but the original members of singer Petr Štepán and drummer Pavel Štepán have remained with the group throughout. The most important part of the group's activity is the concerts, well known as "monstrosity" shows. The longevity of the gothic group is remarkeable in the Czech Republic. During their years they have released many albums. The first was a CD Amulet with a fresh guitar sound. The second was an album with a more "pop" sound, Gotika. These two albums were released by the company Monitor. Then XIII. Století started co-operation with the company Happy Music and released through them three dark gothic albums - the energetic Nosferatu, Werewolf and Ztraceni v Karpatech. XIII. Století became very popular in Poland and Slovakia, especially after their attendance at the Gothic Fest in Bolkow in 1999. Their popularity grew, not only in Poland but in Italy and other European countries.

This was the first release on the french Darkside Label back in 1995. I sometimes read about this band in various zines, but never heard any of their music, so I was happy, to find out more about their work.
Well, it is Gothic-Rock with some experimental moments, highly 90s Dark-Wave elements and, because of the female voices, a little bit of Siouxsie, but anyway, nearly no band of this genre with a woman on the microphone can deny this influence.DEAD SOULS RISING also have a very own sound, even, if the soundquality is not the very best. The two bandmembers transport a really personal and original feeling through their music and this is what counts. So try out this 1995 release and their second CD too.

MORS SYPHILITICA - Feather and Fate

The history of NY's Mors Syphilitica dates back to the goth scene of the mid-80's. Guitarist Eric Hammer and vocalist Lisa Houle first played together in Requiem In White, whose mix of dark, swirling sounds and operatic vocals won them a huge following. After moving to the Big Apple from Boston, they played shows with nationally known bands like Biohazard and Type-O Negative. Eric and Lisa, now married and sharing the same surname, formed Mors Syphilitica {two years ago}. Unlike other bands who rely on pre-programmed backing tracks, the group includes a live rhythm section, which helps them stand out among their peers. Lisa's vocal range can hit high C or dip into the bottom range. Not only does she have the pipes, but she knows how to use them creatively. The end result has drawn comparisons to Switchblade Symphony or Dead Can Dance, but Mors Syphilitica has their own thing going.
